Journal Entry: Blackberry Spirit of Dun Deardail, Highlands

Blackberry spirits are dear friends, luscious and full of the sensual joys of existence. I welcome the bramble patch in my garden as a place where both faeries and animals may gather and find shelter … I work with my friends the bramble tribe when doing shamanic work out on the land, as a mediator spirit that helps me to connect with the deeper energies of the earth and those I may not have encountered before. Her rich spirit allows me to gather berries for preserves, and the dried leaves are good in incense to honour the powers of place. Once when walking in the Scottish Highlands by Dun Deardail (“the dun of Deirdre”) I became tired and sat out on a promontory looking out at Loch Ness far below, when I had a clear vision of a beautiful woman with wild black hair and deep black shining eyes like berries … she smiled and told me this land was hers. The air was filled with the scent of cooking blackberries although there were none to be seen. This warmed my spirit, gave me strength, and comforted me in this strange, wild place. The warm, delicious perfume of rich berries on a stove remained with me all the way, grounding and earthy yet full of delight, as if this wise woman of the hills had opened the door to her dun to wave at us as we passed by.
